Good article - too bad Flickr didn't do anything with it yet.

I think lack of "Discussion" functionality is indeed the #1 problem. It's pathetic atm.

For example, if there only were a simple way to flag a comment as being
1.) a "reply" to a previous comment (a thread)
2.) something that the poster would like to have a reply to (e.g. a serious critique, or a question) (start of a thread)
3.) just a comment ("compliment-and-run") (default)

If these things showed up differently in the "activity" view, the problem would be practically solved IMHO.

I totally agree that your suggestions should be implemented. I'm a member of the "We want Flickr on black" group. And I also would like larger photos in the photostream.

But your suggestions have "workarounds"; meaning you CAN see a photo on black (using bighugelabs.com) and you can also see a photo in 1024 (unless the photographer has specifically prevented it). Both include hassle, though.

But as far as I know, there exists no solution to my "wants". We're stuck with messy discussions and we're stuck with chaotic contact lists.

There IS a workaround for the restricted comments, though, as I mention in the text. But it will screw up for a lot of members who really divide their contacts into friends, family and others.

I guess your three suggestions would make Flickr greater. But in all honesty: Being able to select black as the default background color for my photo stream, and also having the 1024-width photos the default size on the stream, would have been far more useful additions for me personally.
