For normal daily shooting you should use the aperture-priority mode. This will let you use the desired aperture for a given scene, sparing you the time to select the correct shutter speed for the shot.

Are you good at remembering to take pictures in portrait mode? Make it a rule of thumb to shoot natural vertical subjects (such as people!) in portrait mode instead of landscape mode, unless you have specific reasons for composing a scene to include other subjects as well.

Don’t be afraid of shooting wildly with your digital camera! Take LOTS of pictures! Most of them will probably qualify for deletion but before deleting, spend a few seconds assessing WHY the picture doesn’t work and blah blah blah
